Siouxland Public Media to Replace KWIT Transmitter

Mark Munger
/
Siouxland Public Media

Thanks to the support of the Gilchrist Foundation and MRHD, Siouxland Public Media is proceeding with our initiative to replace the KWIT transmitter and make improvements to the transmitter site, including the installation of a backup generator.

Our new transmitter arrived shortly before the latest fund drive (which was very successful thanks to the tremendous support of our community), and our engineers have today begun the installation process. Though this will force us to broadcast from our much less powerful backup transmitter for a few days, ultimately service will be much improved.

The transmitter being replaced is nearing 20 years of age, having served us well for years beyond its expected lifespan. The transmitter we will be using soon employs new technologies that will make our operations both much more efficient and more reliable.

During this process, Siouxland Public Media's coverage will be limited to about a 20-mile radius, and the HD radio signal will not be transmitted. We also expect to be off-air for a few hours on Monday, May 22. However, this will not affect our stream, so please make use of our players at kwit.org as well as on our app, which is free for iOS and Android devices.

Mark Munger first began listening to public radio as a child in the back of his Mom's VW Vanagon, falling in love with the stories on Morning Edition and Prairie Home Companion and the laughter of Click and Clack on Car Talk. Through KWIT, he was introduced to the great orchestras and jazz artists, the sounds of folk and blues, and the eclectic expressions of humanity. This American Life and Radiolab arrived in his formative college years and made him want nothing more than to be a part of the public radio world.
