South Dakota Democrats chose their candidates at last weekend’s convention. But Democrats did not nominate a candidate to challenge Marty Jackley. The former South Dakota attorney general running to reclaim his old job after his successor was removed from office last month. Jason Ravnsborg was removed from office earlier for crimes and malfeasance in office, relating to the fatal crash in which Ravnsborg struck and killed a pedestrian.

A northwest Iowa community has adopted a curfew for children and teenagers. Lake City’s City Council made the move after recent vandalism to stop signs and streets and in the town square, according to Radio Iowa.
The new ordinance applies to everyone under the age of 18.
There are some exceptions to Lake City’s curfew. Those exceptions include being accompanied by an adult, if you’re on your own property and coming back from an activity such as a school event,

In 1989, the Iowa Supreme Court upheld a curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. in Panora for anyone under the age of 18 and many Iowa cities have curfews for minors.

MidAmerican Energy provided 88.5% of customers' annual power needs from renewable energy last year, according to the Iowa Utilities Board. That's five percentage points higher than 2020, according to a Monday news release from the utility.

MidAmerican says it will invest $3.9 billion in additional wind, solar and other renewable energy, and the company plant to meet 100% of its customers' annual power needs with low-carbon sources by 2025.

The Iowa Utilities Board plans to hold a hearing on the request from Oct. 31 through Nov. 4.

Iowans experiencing a mental health crisis will soon have a faster way to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

On July 16, Iowa will join states across the country rolling out a three-digit number — 988 — that people can call or text to reach a trained counselor who can help them deal with suicidal thoughts and mental health crises.

The U.S. Forest Service has given preliminary approval to a Minnesota company that wants to do some exploratory drilling for gold in South Dakota’s Black Hills. The land involved is near the Pactola Reservoir in the Black Hills National Forest and is owned by the federal government. Minneapolis-based F3 Gold has been seeking approval for its drilling project for several years.

South Dakota's six public universities plan to offer undergraduate certificates in an American civics tradition course this fall after Republican Gov. Kristi Noem called on regents to promote patriotism. The Argus Leader reports that Noem called on the Board of Regents during the 2021 legislative session to cultivate a “profound love of our country and a realistic picture of its virtue and challenges” across the six schools. The Legislature handed the state Department of Education $900,000 for a new civics initiative.
