The Iowa Board of Regents talked about raising tuition rates at Iowa's three public universities at a virtual meeting this morning.

The proposal includes a 4.25% increase for resident undergraduate tuition at all three schools. The regents will take final action on the rates in July. Today’s meeting included comments from student government leaders at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa, who called on the state legislature to increase funding for their schools to defray tuition rates that have been steadily rising for years.

Two members of Gov. Kristi Noem’s administration are taking a leave of absence to work on her reelection campaign. Communications director Ian Fury and director of operations Ben Koisti will be moving to paid positions on Noem’s campaign beginning on June 24. Fury said in an email to state employees that he and Koisti plan to return to the administration if Noem is reelected. Fury clarified that although he and Koisti will be paid by the campaign, the leave from state government will be unpaid.

The Sioux City Council will be asked today to adopt an ordinance that prohibits individuals from keeping animals in a vehicle or the bed of a parked truck in ambient temperature that exceeds 79 degrees Fahrenheit. That is, unless the animal is enclosed inside the vehicle with the air conditioning turned on according to the Sioux City Journal.

Under the current city code and the proposed amendment, any peace officer or animal control officer may use whatever force is reasonable and necessary to remove any animal from a vehicle or other enclosed space whenever it appears that the animal's life or health is endangered by extreme temperatures or lack of ventilation.

The officers would not be liable for any damages caused to the vehicle or other enclosed space.
