Today, I am recommending Hawk Mountain by Conner Habib- a novel with a twist that will leave you shaken!
As a librarian I read a lot of books, and I’d like to think it has made me good at predicting a twist in a story before it arrives. Hawk Mountain fully erased this false confidence I had!
This story follows a single father named Todd with chapters alternating between his current life spent raising his son, Anthony, and his childhood experiences at the hands of the school bully, Jack. When an adult Jack stumbles upon Todd and Anthony at the beach one day, a chain of events is set off and the novel starts moving at the breakneck speed of a thriller.
Conner Habib plays with a lot of different genre conventions in Hawk Mountain, which leaves the reader constantly disoriented, but in the best way possible. The suspense is built between the alternating timelines, and readers will be tempted to peek ahead. I caution you, though, because this novel includes a twist that completely shifts the tone of the story. I was left so shocked that I had to pause my reading just to take in what happens. This book is best read without any prior research, and I recommend going into it without any expectations.
In an effort to not give away too much, I will say this: Hawk Mountain resembles stories like Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction, but with a heaping spoonful of Edgar Allen Poe. It’s a novel that simply must be read to be understood. If you enjoy romances, thrillers, and stories about family, then Hawk Mountain has everything you love.
