Senate Subcommitte Votes to Defund Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood Bill 012517

Iowa Republicans have succeeded in advancing a bill to “defund” Planned Parenthood. Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has this report.

Radio Iowa reports that a large crowd of Planned Parenthood backers chanted and protested when a state senate subcommittee approved the bill Tuesday afternoon. If passed, the bill would no longer allow Iowa Medicaid patients to get contraception, cancer screenings or reproductive health tests at Planned Parenthood. Medicaid patients would need to go to other clinics for those services.

Republicans at the state and national level have made “defunding” Planned Parenthood a priority. Some of the protesters at the hearing yesterday were wearing pink hats — the same hats worn at the capitol this past Saturday for the massive women’s march.  Governor Branstad has said he’d sign the legislation and Senate Republicans have said the bill is one of their top four priorities. Now the bill goes to a full senate committee.
