Noon News 1.2.20: Oath of Office, Candidate Visits, Castro Drops Out & Nebraska Earthquake

The Oath of Office took place this morning for Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott.

Scott won his third consecutive term against Maria Rundquist.  Scott also served as mayor in Sioux City in the 1990s.

New Council Member Julie Schoenherr was also sworn in this morning.  She beat incumbent Rhonda Capron in November’s election.  Capron served on the city council for eight years.

Two Democratic candidates for president are in Siouxland today.

A town hall is underway at the Orpheum Theatre with Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar Listen for coverage this afternoon with Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett.

And, billionaire, Tom Steyer will be at the Onawa Public Library at 2:10 this afternoon before holding an event tonight at six at the Sioux City Convention Center. 

Former Vice president Joe Biden is getting a high-profile endorsement for his presidential bid. Abby Finkenauer becomes the first member of Iowa's congressional delegation to take sides in the Democratic nominating contest. 

Polls suggest Biden is in a jumble of top contenders in Iowa along with Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg.

Buttigieg's campaign says he raised more than $24.7 million in the last three months and now has a campaign staff of 500 people nationwide, including here in Sioux City.

Julián Castro ended his run for president today.  While, in Sioux City Castro said he didn’t think Iowa was a diverse enough state to host the “first in the nation caucuses”.

Nebraska roads saw a deadly rise in fatal crashes in 2019. State leaders say the failure to buckle up was a major factor.

A minor earthquake occurred New Year's Day in northeast Nebraska.  It happened about 18 miles south-southwest of O'Neill.

No damage or injuries were reported after the tremor.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake registered about 2.9 in magnitude.

It was pinpointed about five-miles underground near the Holt County village of Chambers.

Experts say an earthquake at that spot is unusual but not unheard of, given that small earth tremors are possible anywhere in the country.
