Inflation Dogs Midwest Economy; Woodbury County Murder Suspect in Custody

  Noon news 060121

The economy in nine Midwest and Plains states remains strong in the wake of a devastating global pandemic.  However, The Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Survey shows inflation is still a problem.

After hitting a record high 73.9 in April, the overall index slipped to still strong 72.3 for May. Any score above 50 on the survey’s indexes suggests growth. However, manufacturing supply managers report that labor shortages and supply bottlenecks continue to restrain growth. Nearly 1 in 3 supply managers surveyed said rapidly rising input prices were their greatest 2021 economic challenge.  The monthly survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

The Woodbury County sheriff’s office says a man from Whiting is in custody and has been today with 2nd degree murder, after a shooting yesterday afternoon in rural Woodbury County.

One person was killed and another was wounded. Twenty-year old Marvin Hildreth is also charged with going armed with intent.

South Dakota has opened its first state-run veterans cemetery. Construction on the cemetery began late in 2019 and culminated with a ribbon cutting on Memorial Day. The Sioux City Journal reports Sioux Falls donated 60 acres for the cemetery, which was funded with $600,000 from the state and $6 million from the federal government. The cemetery is scheduled to begin interments this week.
