THE EXCHANGE 6.23.21: Strengthening & Improving Community Relationships Between Police & the Public

On Tuesday, June 15th, a gathering took place at the Sioux City Public Museum with dozens of concerned community members after the heightened awareness following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis last year.

The Sioux City Human Rights Commission, joined forces with the Sioux City Police Department and Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office for the event called “Strengthening and Improving Community Relationships.”

The purpose, highlighting de-escalation techniques in stressful situations, especially during traffic stops.

The Stanford Open Policing Project analyzed data from 200 million traffic stops in the U.S. since 2015 and found significant racial disparities.

This edition of The Exchange includes insight from community leaders, law enforcement, including Sioux City Police Chief Rex Mueller, Woodbury County Sheriff Chad Sheehan, and County Attorney P.J. Jennings. Plus, Sioux City’s new Community Inclusion Liason, Unity in the Community representatives, a mental health expert, and more.

The evening started with the Director of the Sioux City Human Rights Commission’s Executive Director Karen Mackey and staff member Flora Lee, an important figure with the local chapter of the NAACP.
