Back in 2025, the Atokad horse track operated by a subsidiary of Ho-Chunk Inc. opened in South SiouxCity, and officials announced they would create a casino next to it.
On Thursday, a groundbreaking for that casino will be held in South Sioux, just south of Interstate 129 at G Street.
WarHorse Gaming, LLC will construct the casino, with the goal of opening it in 2027. The facility is expected to have at least 700 gaming options.
WarHorse Gaming is a division of Ho-Chunk, Inc., the economic development corporation of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.
The tribe also owns the WinnaVegas Casino Resort in nearby Sloan, Iowa.
Following the 2020 legalization of casino gambling at racetracks, Warhorse moved quickly on a business plan. South Sioux City will be the third Warhorse gaming location, following others in Lincoln and Omaha that opened in 2024..
Lance Morgan, CEO of Warhorse Gaming, previously said South Sioux City’s proximity to the Winnebago reservation could potentially help employ more tribal members.
