Both of the candidates for Iowa’s 4th congressional district spoke at the Iowa State Fair this week.

Former state lawmaker Dave Dawson from Lawton is the Democratic candidate. Dawson said Congress needs to concentrate on the real issues.

“We need to be focusing on trying to help people make things more affordable," he said.

Dawson says he’s committed to expanding healthcare, addressing the cancer crisis, and improving rural communities.

His challenger is Republican Chris McGowan, head of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce. McGowan said he’ll focus on economic development and property rights if elected to Congress.

McGowan also says the U.S. should build its military, but be extremely prudent in using it, "that will be paramount, top of mind, critically important concern for me.”

McGowan and Dawson recently met at the Woodbury County Fair and expressed interest in holding a debate before the November election.
