Self-serve unleaded gas prices in Sioux City and other towns jumped 30 to 60 cents overnight to Wednesday morning, to reach $3.99 per gallon.
Gas prices in Iowa rose by nearly 25 cents per gallon over the month of July, then another 4 cents the first week of August. The new weekly Iowa report showed no increase in gas prices, but the latest spike was not factored in.
The current average Iowa price of $3.79 per gallon is 91 cents per gallon more when compared to one year ago, and the national unleaded price is $4.04.
Prices are from the American Automobile Association, as reported each Wednesday by the Iowa Department of Agriculture.
The prices spiked as the war in Iran resulted in the Strait of Hormuz being greatly blocked from shipping oil from Mideast nations.
