Woodbury County has filed a petition with the Iowa District Court against the City of Salix for its land annexation process.
In April, the Salix City Council approved a voluntary annexation of about 900 acres.
According to the petition, Salix failed to meet multiple Iowa Code requirements involving the annexation.
The document says Salix improperly accepted four individual annexation applications for land that is not adjacent to the city. According to Iowa law, the land must have a common boundary of at least 50 feet, whereas four of the five applicants did not meet that requirement.
It also says Woodbury County wasn’t provided sufficient time to consult with the city, suggest recommendations, or adopt a resolution before the annexation.
The document claims Salix did not provide the correct boundary map and legal descriptions for county roads before the annexation.
During the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday, Joshua Widman, county attorney, said the next steps will be to serve the petition.
