A spokesperson for Google announced on Monday that the company has finalized an agreement with MidAmerican Energy Company for a data center development in Salix.
According to the statement, the agreement allows Google to explore a potential data center project to meet users’ growing demand for Google products and services.
In the statement, Trent Fellers, Regional Head of Data Center Public Affairs for Google, said the company will go through a public process presenting a proposal and answering residents’ questions.
Fellers mentioned it plans to understand how the project can benefit the residents and community by receiving their input.
He added Google will not be pursuing local property tax abatements or rebates for the project.
According to Fellers, the tax revenue will go directly to the City of Salix, Woodbury County, local school districts, and other local or regional government agencies.
He said Google standards focus on environmental impacts and stability, paying for the data center’s power, facilities engineered to mitigate sound and visual problems, and water stewardship.
Furthermore, Fellers added Google is starting direct conversations with members of the community and will attend the Salix City Council meeting on August 12, 2026.
Since April, there has been an ongoing discussion about a possible data center in Salix; when the city council annexed about 900 acres of land.
In June, a MidAmerican Energy spokesperson confirmed the company was involved with a possible development of a data center.
