U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson is calling the November election a “spiritual battle.”
The Louisiana Republican spoke at a conference in Des Moines hosted by The Family Leader, a conservative Christian organization.
Johnson said Republicans are in the “battles of their lives” to preserve the foundations of the country, calling it a midterm year unlike any other. He used his speech to attack democratic socialists and socialism, portraying them as against Christianity.
There are no democratic socialists running in Iowa’s congressional or statewide races.
Also on Friday, Johnson visited Sioux City to headline a private fundraising breakfast for Iowa 4th District Congressional Republican candidate Chris McGowan. The Democrat in that contest is David Dawson of Lawton.
