A former Nebraska state senator is working to be placed on the November ballot for the governor’s race.

Brett Lindstrom served as a Republican in the state legislature from 2015 to 2023. Earlier this year, he withdrew from the 2nd Congressional District race, a seat left open by Republican Don Bacon. In 2022, he unsuccessfully ran for governor.

In a statement, Lindstrom announced that he has filed a petition and is running as an Independent candidate.

He said Nebraskans deserve leaders who answer to them, not to two parties.

State law requires Lindstrom to collect 4,000 signatures from Nebraska voters, 750 of them must come from each congressional district. The deadline to qualify for the November ballot is August 3.

Other candidates for governor include incumbent Republican Governor Jim Pillen, Democrat Lynne Walz, and Legal Marijuana Now candidate Rick Beard.
