A sculpture that calls to mind an Alice in Wonderland vibe and another of a blue heron are now located along a trail just west of the Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji.

The Sculpture Loop Trail project, as first unveiled in summer 2025, contains 23 permanent and seven annually rotating sculptures. The goal is to show how nature and art can connect, Danielle Clouse Gast, of the art center, said.

About 100 people observed the ceremony unveiling the seven new sculptures on June 18, which included music and artists talking about their works. Many took photos of friends posing with their favorite sculptures.

The Great Blue Heron piece, for example, is made of steel and aluminum and weighs 200 pounds, as created by Jon Kamrath. The rotating pieces are available for purchase.

The recent trail segment at the art center hooks into an existing trail, which extends west to the Dickinson County Nature Center and other trail segments.

The project was modeled on similar trails in Sioux Falls and Mason City.
