The Emergency Medical Services Funding Task Force in South Dakota is set to have its first meeting at the state’s capitol on Wednesday.
The task force was established in March when a bill was signed into law to study ambulance services statewide.
The task force will develop financial strategies for emergency medical services and assess the practicality of making EMS an essential service in the state.
The current system in South Dakota is resulting in bills to residents for ambulance services and other substantial costs.
In South Dakota, state law does not mandate emergency medical services (EMS) as an essential public service, meaning cities and counties are not legally obligated to fund or provide ambulances.
