The Sioux City School Board will appoint a new board member during a special meeting on Monday.

The people who applied for the position will read their statements on why they should be selected, then the board will vote and appoint the person who best fits the position.

There are three candidates for the spot, including Paul William Rhodes, Dr. Amy DeGroot-Hammer, and Jebediah Hibbs.

Rhodes is the South Region Director for Siouxland Youth for Christ, a non-profit organization. In his letter he said he has worked with children of all faiths.

DeGroot-Hammer currently serves as Sioux City’s Uniserv director for Iowa State Education Association. She has also previously worked in the school district as a counselor.

Hibbs is a Navy veteran who is involved with the school district, and his wife teaches in the school division.

In November Hibbs unsuccessfully ran for the school board, then attempted to fill the vacancy left by Jan George.

The school board vacancy was created by the resignation of member Lance Ehmcke in May. Ehmcke left due to health issues.
