People in Iowa and South Dakota can vote today into the early evening to determine nominees for county, state and federal positions in the November general election.
Polls in the primary election will be open in Iowa to 8 p.m. and in South Dakota to 7 p.m.
Voters have to be registered as either a Democrat or Republican to participate in the party primaries.
The candidates have been moving all over the states of Iowa and South Dakota in the attempt to persuade voters. Among the high profile races are for the governor and U.S, Senate seats in both states.
South Dakota also has municipal elections, such as for school board members.
Northwest Iowa election officials have said primary voting turnout is typically low. Buena Vista University Professor Bradley Best said it could be about 25 percent turnout.
Both states have had early absentee voting underway for about three weeks. Iowans who have not mailed in their early ballots can surrender their absentee ballot at their polling place and vote a regular ballot.
The primary election was previously held in Nebraska in May.
