Teachers in South Dakota are seeing a significant decrease in their pay value since 2017.
According to the National Education Association, teachers’ compensation in the state has dropped by about 4.26%. In comparison, the national average is currently at a 4.63% decrease.
Even though teachers’ salaries have increased, so has inflation, making it difficult for teachers to keep up with the costs of living.
Rob Monson, executive director of school administrators of South Dakota, says some school districts are trying to close the gap between increased expenses and the decreased value of salaries by raising property tax levies.
Monson said that it is not a permanent solution.
