There is a Republican battle over the Iowa Senate District 3 seat, where an incumbent is trying to win a new term in the June 2 primary election.

The Republican candidates are Shane Bellefy, of Cherokee, who is seeking to oust state Senator Lynn Evans, of Aurelia.

Evans was first elected in 2022. He had a three decade career in education. He said Wednesday that if re-elected, key issues will be education, pro-life legislation and improving the tax environment for businesses.

“Experience matters, leadership matters, “ Evans said. “I have the skills and experience.”

Bellefy won a seat on the Cherokee County Board of Supervisors in 2024, and won a crowded primary that year as well.

Bellefy, who is a banker, has said his experience on the county board has readied him for the state legislature.

The Republican winner will advance to take on Democrat Mike Frantz, of Storm Lake, in the November general election.
