As another year of the popular Food Truck Fridays endeavor approaches, a Sioux City Councilman is proposing that food businesses pay a $2,500 permit fee to take part.

The Sioux City Council on Monday approved closing downtown streets to carry out the food trucks initiative. Councilman Rick Bertand brought up that the participating businesses should pay a permit, because they are taking business away from brick and mortar businesses, and also do not pay property taxes.

“I’m not against food trucks,” Bertrand told Siouxland Public Media News..

“...From the equalization standpoint, they should pay their share if they’re going to be parked downtown.”

No decision was made in the meeting.

This year the event will run for three months, from June 5 through August 28. Trucks will serve a wide variety of cuisine from late morning until 1:30 p.m

Construction near Pearl Street Park necessitated a change in location this year. The area will be bounded by Jackson Street, Jones Street, Fourth Street and the Discovery Parking Ramp.

Food Truck Fridays began in 2015.
