Sioux City officials are working on ways to improve the Sioux Gateway Airport in terms of infrastructure and ongoing usage, with a new master plan being part of the process.

The Sioux City Council on Monday heard from a consultant on possibilities perhaps costing more than $600 million dollars, in the first mast plan update since 2001.

Part of the airport is used by the 185th Air National Guard Refueling Wing in Sioux City, so military officials have also been part of the master plan discussions.

Some key pieces being discussed include extending a runway and getting more commercial flights at the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration has reviewed the plan.

The projected revenues for the airport plan pieces include more than 50 percent from the federal government, and about 6 percent from the city. Mayor Bob Scott said he appreciates those other revenue sources being in the mix.

Just last week, It was announced that state funding of $10 million has been allocated to rehab a runway at Sioux Gateway Airport,
