The Sioux City School Board approved increasing salaries for unionized teachers in the district during its meeting Monday.
The teachers will get a $200 increase to their base pay and a $625 increase to their longevity pay for the 2026-2027 year.
In February, the Sioux City Education Association started negotiations with the school district regarding the salaries.
Also on Monday, the board approved increases for support personnel, including paraeducators, administrative assistants, and other workers.
The Sioux City Education Association represents 1,100 teachers, and 400 workers are represented by the Sioux City Education Support Personnel Association group.
According to a study released Tuesday, the National Education Association shows that even though teacher pay has increased in recent years, it isn’t keeping up with the cost of inflation.
The Iowa legislature in 2024 passed a proposal to raise the minimum salary in the state to $50,000.
The Republican-led legislature approved an increase in K-12 public school spending of 2 percent for next year.
