After two rounds of voting, the Sioux City School Board appointed Christian Supiot-Perez as the new member during a special meeting on Wednesday.
Supiot-Perez currently serves as a career success coach at Western Iowa Technical Community College and has worked with students from diverse backgrounds.
During the meeting Supiot- Perez said he believes the community and school district are at a crossroads and the board needs someone with a deep understanding of the multilingual families' needs.
He added his drive and commitment to serve the district have not diminished.
“After the November election I joined the school improvement advisory committee because I could not sit idle when I could be helping our students in some capacity,” said Supiot-Perez.
Supiot-Perez said he trusts he will bring valuable experience in leadership, community work, and expertise in multilingual education.
Other applicants were Ryan Dumkrieger, a former principal of North High School, and Jebediah Hibbs, a Navy veteran who is involved with the school district.
The school board vacancy was created by the resignation of member Jan George in mid-March.
In order to become a board member, applicants needed to receive four votes, Supiot-Perez received five.
