A teacher who has been at East Middle since 1990 was named the Sioux City School District Teacher of the Year.

Kate Albrecht was recognized with the award during a surprise assembly at East Middle School on Thursday. In attendance were some of her students, her children, and grandchildren.

Albrecht joined the school as a 6th-grade English teacher and has remained in the role ever since.

Albrecht said after 37 years of teaching her students are the ones who encourage her to keep going.

She said it was her first time receiving the award, that it was unexpected but it is an honor.

Sioux City interim superintendent Jim Vanderloo said Albrecht has left an extraordinary imprint on the East Middle community.

He said she is one of the best and the school district is very fortunate to have her energy, enthusiasm, and dedication on their team.

Albrecht began her career in the school district in 1989, teaching first grade at Whittier and Hawthorne elementary schools.

Her name will be submitted to the Iowa Department of Education for consideration as the state’s Iowa Teacher of the Year recognition.
