Longtime Sioux City School District administrator Jim Vanderloo was named interim superintendent by the Sioux City School Board on Thursday.
That took place after interim superintendent candidates were interviewed in separate closed sessions.
Board President Jan George in a release said Vanderloo has an impressive career with the school district and is versed for the new role.
There is a vacancy in the superintendent position, after the short tenure of the predecessor, Juan Cordova.
Roughly one year ago, Cordova was picked for the post, with his work for the Sioux City School District set to begin on July 1.
However, Cordova’s time as superintendent was short and controversial. He was placed on a leave of absence in August, then again in November.
In a school board meeting in the first week of January, the board members unanimously accepted Cordova’s resignation.
In a subsequent January meeting, the school board agreed the interim superintendent would serve from April 1, 2026, through June 2027.
The board members are bypassing the option to fill the position before June 2026 by not permanently filling the superintendent position until July 2027.
Vanderloo has served the district for 34 years, beginning his career as a special education history teacher at West Middle School in 1992. Since that time, he has held teaching and leadership positions at North High School, Woodrow Wilson Middle School, and West High School.
