The Sioux City School Board voted to start the search process for an interim superintendent in its meeting Monday.
During its meeting, the board agreed that the interim superintendent position should be filled immediately with their term ending June 30th, 2026. The interim superintendent will have the option to extend their term and the ability to apply for the superintendent position.
Additionally, during the board’s work session, there was mention of how the board cannot offer a multi-year contract when they are finishing paying out the contract of the superintendent.
The interim superintendent position is open to external and internal candidates and will be appointed. The board hopes to fill the position seven days after they post it on their website. The vote passed 7-0.
There has been some turmoil in the Sioux City School District superintendent position since July 2025, when Juan Cordova began working in that top post. He was placed on two leave of absences in August and November, before the school board accepted his resignation, which becomes effective on March 31.
Currently, associate superintendent Angela Bemus is serving as acting superintendent.
