In a letter sent to the Sioux City School Board Tuesday evening, Angela Bemus said she will not be a candidate for interim superintendent.

Angela Bemus has been the associate superintendent for the Sioux City school district since June 2022.

In the letter, Bemus says she feels she's not the appropriate person for the role and cannot serve the district and board in complete agreement under the current circumstances.

In addition to her duties, Bemus has taken on responsibilities of superintendent, including state training, committee responsibilities, and staff performance decisions. She has been fulfilling both roles since November.

In the past the school district has provided a stipend to administrators who have been assigned responsibilities outside of their contract.

However, Bemus says she has not been approached about a stipend for performing the additional duties.

She expressed she is not comfortable serving in the superintendent role until March 31st, saying all superintendent decision-making will be deferred to the school board until an interim superintendent is appointed.

Bemus said she is content continuing to serve as associate superintendent but has requested the school board provide a clear job description for her position.

In their meeting Monday, the school board agreed the interim superintendent would serve from April 1st, 2026, to June 2027.

The board members are bypassing the option to fill the position before June 2026 by not permanently filling the superintendent position until July 2027.
