The South Dakota legislature is advancing a bill that would legalize online sports betting in the state.
If the bill passes, it would expand online sports betting statewide and allow the state to establish regulations.
Revenue from the betting would be split 90 and 10 percent, with 90 percent going to property tax relief and 10 percent going to Deadwood.
John Pappas, senior advisor of Geocomply, says their data shows 93 percent of South Dakotans crossing into Iowa are only going to place bets and return.
At this time the amount of revenue made from wagering is undetermined because it depends on the rules established for gaming.
Opponents of the bill say that it's a poor way to reduce property taxes, and it enables highly addictive gaming for younger people.
It advanced to the Senate Floor on a 4 to 3 vote.
