A Sioux City resident who sprayed painted flowers on manhole covers had a hearing Wednesday morning, in an attempt to have his charges dropped.
Brandon Bradshaw was arrested in November for criminal mischief and drinking in public. At the time of his arrest, he was carrying a bag with eight cans of spray paint and other painting supplies.
Bradshaw said he didn’t mean to break the law and that painting the flowers was about making people smile or have a better day. He spray-painted approximately 10 flowers in the Morningside area of the city.
Bradshaw’s attorney told the judge the mayor of Sioux City had previously signed an agreement to dismiss the charges.
However, the prosecutor says the county attorney's office did not sign off on the agreement.
Since Bradshaw's arrest, he has received support from the community, with people sharing an online petition requesting charges to be dropped. Local businesses and residents asked him to paint flowers on their parking lots and driveways. Sac City showed its support by starting a manhole art contest.
The ruling will be issued at a later time.
