Nebraska Senator Dunixi Guereca introduced the Guest Worker Permit Act in the state’s legislature Thursday, which would allow undocumented people to receive work permits.
The bill would require undocumented people to pay $2,500 if they entered the county illegally, prove they have a job, and undergo a national criminal history check. Individuals are required to apply for a permit before working under a contract.
Guereca said the bill provides people with options and pathways for them to remain in the state legally and continue to help Nebraska grow.
The bill would require the governor to help get necessary waivers from the federal government.
Governor Jim Pillen has taken a strong stance against illegal immigration, sending troops to the border and supporting an immigration raid in Omaha last year.
