There has been recent activity concerning the November 2026 election, with Northwest Iowa state lawmakers announcing whether they will seek re-election and other people saying they will run for those legislative positions.

Iowa House District 3 Republican Tom Jeneary, of Le Mars, will not run for re-election, and Iowa House District 5 Republican Zach Dieken, of Granville, also is bowing out at the end of the year.

On Friday, Shane Bellefy, of Cherokee, said he will run for the Iowa Senate District 3 seat. Bellefy is a banker who is also currently a member of the Cherokee County Board of Supervisors.

That Iowa Senate District 3 seat is currently held by another Republican, Lynn Evans.

In addition to announcing their plans to run, to get on the ballot, people running for state or federal office must file nomination papers from February 24 to March 13, and people pursuing county office must file papers from March 2 to 20.
