South Sioux City School District officials have been wrestling with ways to get more classroom space, and new data shows there is higher enrollment for this school year.
There are 38 more students for the 2025-26 year, as enrollment has reached 3,908. A South Sioux City Schools spokesman shared the number with Siouxland Public Media News on Wednesday, which showed an enrollment gain of 1 percent.
Back in May, South Sioux City community members voted against a $127 million proposal to modernize and expand facility options in many buildings.
After that defeat, Spokesman Lance Swanson in July said district officials were thoughtfully considering possible next steps to address space needs.
Leading up to the bond vote, district officials said school enrollment is expected to grow from 3,800 to about 4,300 students within the next 10 years.
Now, Swanson said the newest increases are for students in Kindergarten, third grade, and eighth grade.
“In terms of space, our elementary and middle school buildings remain the tightest as enrollment continues to rise, especially at the lower grade levels where class sizes are nearing capacity,” he said.
Nebraska schools report their enrollments to the state in the first week of October.
