There is a new lawmaker in the South Dakota Legislature, following an appointment by Governor Larry Rhoden.

There was a vacancy in the state House of Representative for a district in the Southeast part of the state, after Republican Richard Vasgaard died in August.

Rhoden appointed John Shubeck, who also is a Republican, as a District 16 representative.

Shubeck, who lives in Beresford and manages a farm, served in the United State Marine Corps for 20 years. He received the Bronze Star and other honors.

Shubeck said he plans to continue Vasgaard’s legacy by working hard on the policies that support South Dakotans in the area, District 16 covers Union, Turner and Lincoln counties.
