The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services is investigating an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in central Iowa that has resulted in one death.

The outbreak has affected 21 people living in Marshalltown, and the person who died had underlying health conditions.

Legionnaires disease is a form of pneumonia caused by a bacteria that thrives in warm water and is typically contracted by inhaling affected droplets.

People aged 50 and older, smokers, and those with underlying health issues are at high risk of becoming critically ill. Most healthy individuals who are exposed do not get sick.

Officials advise that anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, or muscle aches should seek immediate medical attention, especially if they are in the Marshalltown area.
