The composition of the Northwest Iowa seats that comprise the Iowa Legislature remains heavily Republican.
There were few Democrats on the ballot, and they did not fare well. The sole Democrat to win was in Iowa House District 1, which is a Sioux City district, where incumbent Democrat J.D. Scholten defeated Republican Josh Steinhoff.
Scholten took 53.3 percent of the vote.
Rural Northwest Iowa voters continued their trend of strongly supporting Republicans. Most of the Republican wins were dominating, with nominees getting in the 60 to 70 percent range.
Of the combined House and Senate seats with Northwest Iowa territory in the Iowa Legislature, 11 of 12 are held by Republicans.
Iowa House District 2: Incumbent Republican Bob Henderson, of Sioux City, defeated Democrat Jessica Lopez-Walker, of Sioux City, winning with 60.6 percent.
Iowa House District 13: Republican Travis Sitzmann, of Le Mars, defeated Democrat Roseanne Plante, of Hinton, and Independent Parker Hansen, of Correctionville.
There was no incumbent, as state Rep. Ken Carlson did not seek re-election. Sitzmann took 73 percent of the vote, while Plante got 19 percent, and Hansen had 8 perecent.
Iowa House District 3: Incumbent Republican Tom Jeneary, of Le Mars, defeated Democrat Emma Buza, of Hawarden.
Iowa House District 4: Incumbent Republican Skyler Wheeler, of Hull, was unopposed.
Iowa House District 5: In a contest with no incumbnt, the new representative is Republican Zachary Dieken of Granville, who got 78 percent, to defeat Independent Michael Schnoes, of Sutherland.
Iowa House District 6: Incumbent Republican Megan Jones, of Sioux Rapids, was unopposed.
Iowa House District 10: Incumbent Republican John Wills, of Spirit Lake, was unopposed.
Iowa House District 12: Incumbent Republican Steve Holt, of Denison, earned another two-year term by virtue of his defeat of Democrat Dustin Durbin, of Dow City. Holt took 78 percent of the vote.
Iowa House District 14: Incumbent Republican Jacob Bossman, of Sioux City, had no opponent.
Iowa House District 15: Incumbent Republican Matt Windschitl, of Missouri Valley, got 69 percent of the vote, to defeat Democrat Benjamin Schauer, of Dunlap.
Iowa Senate District 2: Incumbent Republican Jeff Taylor, of Sioux Center, was unopposed.
Iowa Senate District 4: Incumbent Republican Jason Schultz, of Schleswig, and Libertarian David Davis, of Harlan, cruised to victory with 81 percent.
Overall, Republicans have maintained their majorities in the Iowa House and Senate, and likely picked up some seats.
House Republicans appear to have won a supermajority, and Senate Republicans appear to have kept their supermajority.
In the House, Republicans unseated Democratic Representatives Sue Cahill of Marshalltown and Chuck Isenhart of Dubuque. And Democrat Matt Blake unseated longtime Republican Senator Brad Zaun in the most expensive statehouse race in Iowa this year.
