Newscast 06.09.23: Gov. Reynolds weighs in Trump indictments; SBA loans available for businesses hurt Davenport building collapse ; IA Supreme Court says whistleblower law not retroactive

Gov. Kim Reynolds released the following statement today in response to former President Donald Trump announcing an indictment from the U.S. Department of Justice:

“The federal indictment of former President Trump represents a grave warning sign for the state of equal justice and public trust in government institutions in this country."

Former President Donald Trumphas been indicted on seven counts in the special counsel’s classified documents probe.
Trump is facing a charge under the Espionage Act as well as charges of obstruction of justice, destruction or falsification of records, conspiracy and false statements.

The U.S. Small Business Administration today announced it will provide low-interest disaster loans for residents and businesses impacted by the partial building collapse of The Hotel Davenport Apartments. That’s after a request from Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds.

Homeowners, renters, businesses, and most nonprofit organizations in Scott County whose property was damaged or destroyed by this incident will be able to apply for the SBA loans.

Residents, businesses, and nonprofit organizations in the surrounding counties of Cedar, Clinton, and Muscatine, whose property was damaged or destroyed as a result of this incident, also may be eligible for SBA assistance. Applicants may apply online, receive additional disaster assistance information ,and download applications at https://disasterloanassistance.sba.gov/.

The Iowa Supreme Court says a law allowing for additional damages for whistleblowers cannot retroactively apply to a fired DCI agent, according to Radio Iowa.

Larry Hedlund was fired in 2013 after filing a report on an SUV he said was going 90 miles an hour on Highway 20. The SUV was carrying former Governor Terry Branstad and then Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds. Hedlund wanted to seek additional damages under the whistleblower law enacted six years after the incident. The state supreme court overturned a lower court ruling, saying the law was not meant to be retrospective.

The Iowa Utilities Board is set to host a public meeting in Sioux City in July to discuss MidAmerican Energy’s proposal to raise gas delivery rates. The meeting is set for 6 p.m. on Monday, July 24 at the Sioux City Convention Center.

On average, MidAmerican anticipates customers would see a 6% increase for their total monthly gas bills, according to a release from the Berkshire Hathaway-owned company.

Iowa is back in the “Drought Watch” category.

DNR Hydrology coordinator, Tim Hall says the drought watch system allows him to work with other state agencies in assessing the issue. He says the drought watch is similar to a thunderstorm or tornado watch. Hall adds that right now the drought is getting a little bit worse all the time. Hall says the state is also seeing the start of what could be a “flash drought,” or a rapid increase in drought conditions in some areas.
