Thirteen members of Sioux City Fire Rescue returned from the scene of the deadly apartment building collapse in Davenport on Tuesday. They arrived early on Friday. The firefighters helped search for and recover the remains of the victims. Three people died after the partial collapse on May 28th. The Department of Homeland Security called the Iowa Search and Rescue Team into action, which also includes members of the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.
With all of the remains in the partially collapsed building in Davenport thought to be found, the work now shifts to accountability for what happened.
While many lawsuits are anticipated, a Philadelphia-based structural collapse attorney has filed the first this week. Attorney Jeffery Goodman is representing former resident Dayna Feuerbach.
“By filing a civil lawsuit, we’re able to help get answers to what happened and why it happened. Able to determine who is accountable and hold them accountable. And hopefully by doing so to help inspire change.”
Building owner Andrew Wold, the City of Davenport, as well as prior owners, have all been named in the lawsuit.
Goodman led a plaintiffs’ litigation team that resulted in the $1.2 billion dollar settlement to the families of the 98 people who died and the survivors of the Surfside, Florida Condo collapse in 2021.
Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Twitter that he’s sending staff from his state’s emergency management division and the Florida DOT to assist in the ongoing recovery in Davenport. The agencies were involved in the long recovery after the collapse of the Surfside condo.
Former Vice President Mike Pence has filed paperwork declaring his campaign for president in 2024, setting up a historic challenge to his former boss, Donald Trump. Pence, the nation’s 48th vice president, will formally launch his bid for the Republican nomination with a video and kickoff event in Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday, the date of his 64th birthday. His candidacy adds yet another contender to the growing GOP field and puts Pence in direct competition with his former boss just two years after their time in the White House ended with the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
The Iowa Concern Hotline has seen a nearly 25% increase in calls over the past 12 months. Find out more on the story from Radio Iowa.

First West Nile Virus Case Detected in Nebraska
Lincoln – The first human case of West Nile virus for the 2023 season has been found in the Three Rivers Public Health District. The person who tested positive was not hospitalized according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
West Nile virus is the most preventable mosquito-borne disease in the U.S. Transmission of West Nile Virus occurs through the bite of a mosquito that has acquired the virus by feeding on an infected bird. In turn, the mosquito passes the virus to humans. You cannot get West Nile Virus from a dead bird. The best thing the public can do to protect themselves from West Nile Virus is to avoid mosquitoes.
People can reduce their risk by:
- Using a repellant that contains DEET, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oil or IR3535
- Wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes, and socks when outside
- Taking extra precautions when going outdoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active
- Draining standing water around your home. Standing water and warmth breed mosquitoes
- Irrigate lawns and gardens carefully to prevent water from standing for several days
- Empty and change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels and potted trays at least once a week, if not more often
- Make sure window and door screens are “bug tight” and repair or replace torn screens
Most people who are infected have no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms. Less than 1% of people infected with West Nile Virus become severely ill. However, people over 50 and those with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable to the disease and are more likely to experience serious consequences.
For more information, call Three Rivers District Health Department at (402) 727-5396 or visit www.threeriverspublichealth.org. Additional information can be found on the DHHS website at: https://dhhs.ne.gov/pages/west-nile-virus.aspx.

“John Adams, Our Second President”
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (June 6, 2023) — Most American don't know much about “John Adams, Our Second President.” Wedged between Washington and Jefferson, both symbols of their own age who continue to fascinate Americans today, Adams served only one term before defeat forced him to return to his home in Massachusetts. Award-winning author and historian Don Hickey will deliver an illustrated lecture on Adams at the Betty Strong Encounter Center at 2:00 PM on June 18, 2023.
At the forefront of the movement for independence, John Adams seemed like a natural to succeed Washington as our second president. However, his personal demons often interfered with his public life and made it difficult for him to achieve a special place in the hearts and minds of the American people.
Hickey holds a PhD from the University of Illinois and is a specialist in early American history and American military history. He is best known for his books, The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict (University of Illinois Press) and Nebraska Moments: Glimpses of Nebraska’s Past (University of Nebraska Press). His latest book, Tecumseh's War: The Epic Conflict for the Heart of America, (Westholme Publishing) will be published in the fall.
Interpretive Center to Present First Production on Outdoor Stage
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (June 6, 2023) —The Sioux City Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center (“the Center”) announces the inaugural program of the Lewis and Clark Outdoor Events series, “My Way: A Tribute to the Music of Frank Sinatra.” The production will be at 7:00 PM on Friday, June 16 and Saturday, June 17, 2023. Admission is free. The audience will be positioned in a grassy area of Center’s campus, so are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, as well as refreshments.
Containing snippets of 55 incredible songs from the Great American Songbook, “My Way” celebrates the mystique of Frank Sinatra and the unforgettable music that made him famous. The setting is a “Sinatra-esque” sophisticated night club/saloon. Much of the music is orchestrated in Sinatra’s favorite musical style, swing jazz. Each of the four characters represents a different yet distinctive aspect of the Sinatra mystique. “My Way” is largely about the subjects of romance and relationships.
The show will be the first on the Center’s new “Spirit of Discovery” outdoor stage.
“The Center’s staff has been planning and raising funds for the outdoor Spirit of Discovery stage for more than a year, and we’re excited to be able to bring a unique new entertainment option to Siouxland families,” says Tracy Bennett, Executive Director. “This is part of a larger effort we’re undertaking to broaden our appeal to more diverse audiences by expanding our range of programming options. For any families who aren’t familiar with the Center, this will be a great way to get acquainted.”
