Rent A Chick Program

As Easter approaches, a lot of parents are faced with children who want a baby chick.  But what to do when the chick becomes a full grown bird?  An Omaha farm has come up with a solution.  Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has details.

The Omaha World Herald reports that the Barreras Family Farm has a Rent-a-Chick program.  Instead of buying a cute Easter chick that then grows up into a large, clucking chicken, families can pay $25 or $35 to take two little ones home with them for a week or two. Then the families take the chicks back to the farm to grow up and lay eggs.

The owners say the program gives the community time with chicks during Easter, but they don’t get abandoned after they are no longer cute and cuddly.

This is the third year the Barreras family has offered the program in Omaha.  For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary Hartnett.
