Teacher Leadership and Compensation Program Report

Educators in Iowa are benefiting from a leadership program that puts consulting teachers in the classroom.  However, so far, student scores aren’t keeping pace.

Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has this report.

The Teacher Leader and Compensation System is being used in several Northwest Iowa school districts including Sioux City, Le Mars, Hinton, Lawton-Bronson, and Kingsley Pierson.  It puts teacher coaches in classrooms to help educators improve and students achieve more.  2013 was the first year of the program.  The American Institutes of Research evaluated the program in 2013 and student achievement in districts using the TLC system lagged behind those that weren’t using it at least 1-2 points on Iowa Assessments.  However, researchers say that  these are only preliminary findings.  The Iowa Department of Education spokespersons says the state is glad to have the data. Districts will continue to use the program.  For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary Hartnett.
