Iowa Democratic Party Calls for Independent Investigation Into Caucus Results

The chair of the Iowa Democratic Party called for an independent investigation into the problems that caused mayhem and delayed Monday night’s caucus results in the Hawkeye State.

Troy Price tweeted today, “With reports from 100% of the precincts in, we are taking steps to ensure the accuracy of the results. An independent investigation of what happened is necessary once we finalize the results.”
The tweet comes as Iowa Democrats scramble to finalize the tallies from the caucuses after reporting inconsistencies.  Those issues fueled questions from several campaigns and observers over the validity of the results.

The Iowa Democratic Party has extended until Monday a deadline for presidential candidates to request a review of the results of this week's Iowa presidential caucuses. Originally, the candidates had until midday Friday to request a review.

Online misinformation and conspiracy theories are cropping up in the wake of the fiasco around this week’s Iowa Democratic caucuses. The failure of a party smartphone app, delays in reporting and inaccuracies in the results cast doubt on an already confusing process.

It’s a prime environment for the spread of misinformation, says Indiana University researcher Nico Casas.

“What we need to do as a whole is be more conscious about what we’re…what type of information and the kind of information that we’re digesting. And so we’re not just impulsively clicking that share button.”

Casas says being more cognizant and careful about media consumption can help people spot misinformation and slow its spread.
