Two Anniversaries: Flight 232 and The Moon Landing

On The Exchange, we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first man on the moon, on July 20th, 1969.  We talk with Dr. Todd Young, Professor of Physics and Astronomy and the director of the Fred G. Dale Planetarium at Wayne State College about the importance of the moon landing, and why the space program is so important to our future.

We talk with some older Siouxlanders who recall watching the moon landing live on television all those years ago.

In addition, we recall the crash landing of United Flight 292 at the Sioux Gateway Airport, that happened 30 years ago, on July 19, 1989.

We talk with those who attended a special History at High Noon at the Sioux City Public Museum on Thursday.  Most of those at the event were witnesses to the crash or ended up caring for the survivors.

Former Siouxland television news anchor and reporter Dave Nixon shares his memories of the day Flight 232 crashed, and Larry Finley at the Mid American Museum of Aviation and Transportation talks about a special open house honoring those who lived and died that day, and those that assisted them.

And CNOS brain surgeon Dr. Quentin Durwood tells a moving story of how he and other physicians worked to save survivors of Flight 232.
