Today, I’m recommending A Sea of Unspoken Things, the latest book from Adrienne Young, one of my must-read authors whose work I’ve previously recommended here on Check It Out.
James and Johnny Golden were once inseparable. For as long as she can remember, James shared an almost supernatural connection with her twin brother, Johnny, that went beyond sheer intuition, there were moments where it seemed like either twin could feel what the other was feeling. When Johnny is killed in a tragic accident, James knows before her phone even rings that her brother is gone and that she’s alone—truly alone—for the first time in her life.
Returning to their secluded hometown to settle Johnny’s affairs, James is forced to revisit the ominous events of their shared past and has to finally face Micah, the only other person who knows their secrets—and the only man she has ever loved. But as James delves deeper into Johnny’s world, she realizes that their unique connection hasn’t completely vanished. The more she immerses herself in his life and his work, the more questions she has about the brother she thought she knew. Johnny was hiding something, and he’s not the only one.
The deeper she digs, the more compelled she is to unravel the truth behind the days leading up to his mysterious death. Ultimately, James must decide which truths should come to light, and which are better left buried forever.
Both chillingly suspenseful and hauntingly beautiful, A Sea of Unspoken Things is yet another winner from an author whose nods to magical realism remind me of Alice Hoffman and Sarah Addison Allen.
Like with all of Adrienne Young’s other adult fiction, I found myself devouring this book with a single-minded ferocity that I should probably be a little embarrassed by but can’t seem to help because her stories are truly that good.
