Check It Out: Riley Thorn Series by Lucy Score

This is Kelsey Patterson with the Sioux City Public Library and you’re listening to Check It Out.

Before she was an instant New York Times bestselling author, Lucy Score grew up in a literary family who insisted that the dinner table was for reading. At the age of 13, she stole her first romance novel off her mother’s bookshelf and never looked back. Known for her likeable, flawed characters, plot-driven style, giggle-inducing humor, and writing romance so steamy her family can’t look her in the eye, today, I’m recommending Lucy Score’s four-book series featuring Riley Thorn—an incredibly reluctant psychic and accidental amateur sleuth. Readers are introduced to Riley’s wildly entertaining life in The Dead Guy Next Door. Broke, divorced, and living with a pack of elderly roommates, she’s been having hallucinations that her tarot-card reading mom is sure are clairvoyant visions. Just when things can’t get worse, Nick Santiago, a so-hot-it-should-be-illegal private investigator shows up on her doorstep looking for her neighbor...who turns up murdered.

In The Corpse in the Closet, things are heating up for Riley and boyfriend, Nick. First, her disapproving grandmother arrives determined to make Riley take her powers seriously and then there’s the homicide detective who needs her help figuring out who murdered the well-dressed corpse in the walk-in closet.

The third book, The Blast from the Past finds Riley and Nick having moved into their new fixer upper. While Nick gives up sleeping and showering to obsess over the cold case that still haunts him, Riley has her hands full fixing up the crumbling crime scene they now call home. But things come to a screeching halt when Riley’s abducted and her powers go on the fritz.

Lastly, The Body in the Backyard sees Riley’s self-absorbed news anchor ex-husband careening back into her life when he unexpectedly shows up at her door, begging for help in finding out who’s trying to take him off the air—permanently.
