Warren Calls for Govt. to Get Involved in Drug Manufacturing at AARP Forum

Four of the Democratic presidential candidates are appearing today at the Sioux City Convention Center, at one of a series of AARP Des Moines Register forums across the state.  Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke, author Marianne Williamson and entrepreneur Andrew Yang are taking part today in today's forum.

Senator Warren was asked about her plan to allow the government to get into the business of manufacturing prescription drugs, in order to keep prices down.  She says the production of generic insulin could help a lot of people who are burdened by high drug prices.

“If we have a market that’s not working, then the government should come in and then we are going to turn it around and offer it to the American people at cost-plus.

She adds that the government could also negociate on prices with drug companies, and import drugs from other countries, as long as safety and quality are up to US standards.
