A Substantial Increase in Iowa and Siouxland COVID-19 Cases

Woodbury County today has 17 new COVID-19 cases, with a total of  3,112 and 43 deaths.  Iowa has nearly 500 new cases and 701 deaths.

At a news conference his afternoon Kevin Greime director Siouxland District Health said he was disappointed with those numbers, and the reluctance of some people to wear face masks.

“We want to continue with opening up more activities. We all like to do social things, be we need to do things withing parameters so they are safe, and we are not doing things to contribute to the spread of the disease.”
Greime was also asked about the Iowa Department of Education decision not to require facemasks for students, teachers, and staff in K-12 schools.

“That to me creates some red flags, and I’m concerned.  SO we will continue to work with our local districts and the masking sort of and other strategies.  That caused me take a breath and think ok we are going to have to do this locally again, and do what’s best for the community but that’s not out of the ordinary for us either.”

The Sioux City Community School district has passed a basic “Return to Learn” plan that advises the use of masks by everyone in the school but does not lay out how that will work.
