The Legislature Adjourns; Passes Anti-Police Brutality Bill-The Exchange

Coming up on the exchange, we have a wrap up of the 2020 legislative session with Republican Siouxland State Senator Jim Carlin and Siouxland Democratic State Represenative Chris Hall. Carlin and other Republicans voted for a budget that is basically status quo in the age of COVID 19.

State Representative Chris Hall (D)

However, Chris Hall says republicans basically handed over decisions about the 8 billion dollar state budget to the governor and her staff.

Today we also have a conversation with a public health official about the status of covid 19 in Buena Vista County, which is now a designated hotspot for the coronavirus.

Also, we talk about the meaning of Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19.  The day commerorate the day that slaves in the United States were freed.   The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.

We talk about what Juneteenth means in the days following protests and marches after the death of African American George Floyed at the hands of police.

And Siouxland Public Media's Shela Brummer talks with the host of Iowa Basement Tapes Kristian Day.
