We have directed a lot of reporting in recent weeks to what is happening in Salix, Iowa, a town of less than 300 people about a dozen miles south of Sioux City.
Earlier this spring, the Salix City Council annexed about 900 acres of land into the city, and that tract of land and the steps taken by the city have come under high scrutiny, amid the possibility that it could become the location for a data center.
There have been ongoing developments in this developing story, and many Siouxlanders are really paying attention. There have been lots of people attending Salix City Council meetings to try to see what’s happening with potential data center, and also a large gathering in June at a city park.
The new piece this week is that Woodbury County officials plan to ask for a judicial review on whether the city of Salix followed the intent of Iowa law when annexing about 900 acres of rural land into the city.
This episode of What's The Frequency is a long form discussion with Salix Mayor Kevin Nelson. He covers a lot of ground, concerning the annexation process, city council actions, and reactions to the latest developments.
Nelson: "The city doesn't put up a sata center, individual citizens Don't put up a data center," only a private business could do that, although the tract in question would first need a zoning change.
He added, "The mood is tense. We've not had something this divisive."
Nelson also discussed death threats at city officials, and pointed ahead to the next council meeting in August, where, a city data moratorium could be finalized.
