For this episode of What’s The Frequency, the state legislatures in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa are getting started. Lawmakers will introduce bills that could change state fiscal or taxation policies, or that impact people’s lives through agencies that have services in education, law enforcement, health care, or in other areas.
There will be the annual battles over how much to deliver to public education and teachers.
The South Dakota Legislature begins the 2025 session on January 13, and the Nebraska Unicameral gaveled in on January 7. We will have more from those two states in an upcoming What’s The Frequency.
For this episode, we focus on the Iowa Legislature, which begins on January 12.
My guests to talk about what may lie ahead are Democratic representative J.D. Scholten of Sioux City’s House District 1, and Republican Jacob Bossman of Sioux City, and House District 14.
Bossman said key issues will be property taxes and property rights. He said Republicans will well vet proposals that will help Iowans in many ways, including in workforce development.
Property tax changes were widely discussed as a big push for changes in 2025, and both lawmakers discuss why that didn’t reach fruition.
Scholten said he has been frustrated by the focus of majority part Republicans in pursuing policy pieces that come from outside Iowa groups, and a lack of education funding and issues that impact working families.
